Spoken word project goes live

Recordings start as we build a spoken word archive

Today marks the start of our ground-breaking new spoken word project here at shmu. Over the next three months, we'll be recording a huge archive of poems, stories, comedy, drama and more.

We've already had a great response but we're keen to have more people involved - we'll support you through the whole process, so if you've got a desire to write and record anything that could be termed 'spoken word', then please get in touch.

The project is funded by Aberdeen City Council's Cultural Grant Awards, so is open to anyone from Aberdeen who wishes to get involved. There are no age restrictions and you do not need previous experience of writing or recording.

We'll be using the shmuSOUND recording studio at the Tilly Youth Project to record the pieces, each of which should be no longer than 5 minutes in length. We'll leave the content up to you, but please make sure it is appropriate for a radio broadcast. We haven't put a limit on how many pieces you can record, but logistically it would be better to do them all in one session.

The recording process will be relaxed and there will be no hurry, so those first-time studio nerves will be gone in no time and you'll have a great experience.

Once all the pieces are recorded, we'll be doing a series of special broadcasts on shmuFM and through our website, devoted to the new spoken word archive - celebrating creativity in the city.

To get involved, all you need to do is email sound@shmu.org.uk with your idea(s) for recording, and we'll take it from there, arranging a suitable time for you to come to the studio. If you feel you need a little help with your writing before we record, then just let us know.

We're taking bookings now and the project will run until March, but places are limited, so don't dilly-dally!
