Moving Image Arts: AS Level Film Course

Study film-making at shmu as part of the school curriculum

Shmu will once again deliver the AS Level Moving Image Arts course for the 20/21 academic year. Moving Image Arts (MIA) is an Applied Subject that examines the history, techniques and creative impact of film, while offering the knowledge and skills to enable students to make their own films.

Over the course of the year, you will develop a knowledge & understanding of film language and techniques with a focus on key areas such as Camera, Lighting, Mise en Scene, Sound and  Editing.

As a student on the course, you will study key movements in film such as Classical Hollywood  Style, Formalism, Realism and the work of Alfred Hitchcock. A critical understanding of these filmmaking styles will then inform your own practice as you apply your creative & technical knowledge to the creation of a 3–4minute short film as part of a portfolio of work.

The course culminates with an exam that focuses on the history, techniques and theory of film. While the course is delivered at shmu, students will attend NESCol to sit both the prelim and the final exam.

Moving Image Arts is an ideal choice for students wishing to pursue a career in the Creative Industries. Progression towards the study of Film & TV in Further and Higher Education is a key aim for many learners each year, whilst others use the skills and knowledge they gain to progress towards entry level roles in Film, TV and the wider Creative Industries.

Martha, an MIA participant in 2019, said "I feel like I really got a lot out of it especially on the theory side. I feel like going into university, and I’m not going to feel like I’m behind on anything. Also, structuring essay things and analysing film – I feel like I can do that a lot better now and I can break things down, and I know the right language to use."

The course will take place at Station House Media Unit’s HQ in Woodside, Aberdeen, every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 2-4pm. The course starts on Monday 7th June and runs throughout the academic year.
