Nothing to do? Come to shmu!

Free summer activities for young people from regeneration areas of city

Thanks to funding from Cashback, Fairer Aberdeen and YouthLink Scotland, we're offering an exciting summer programme of free media-based activities to young people who live in the regeneration areas of Aberdeen and have just left P7 or are at secondary school.

Sessions will run throughout the school holidays from July 7th.

Wednesdays will be set aside for young people who are moving up to secondary school after the summer, while Thursdays are for pupils already in S1 and above.

All sessions are free, and lunch and refreshments will be provided,

If young people enjoy these taster sessions, they will then be eligible to join shmu's established Youth Media Project, offering them the opportunity to continue to develop their skills and confidence after the summer.

To join the sessions, potential participants will need to live in Torry, Tillydrone, Seaton, Woodside, Northfield, Middlefield or Cummings Park.

Andy Spence-Jones, Youth Services Manager at shmu, explained: "The sessions will help young people get creative, learn new skills, meet new people and most of all, have fun.

"You don't have to have any previous experience in creating media and you'll get the opportunity to try out filming, music and podcasting, with shows being created and broadcast live on shmuFM, our community radio station, and TV shows broadcast live on YouTube.

"When the weather is good, we will take our activities outside and indoor activities will take place in our amazing building in Woodside, where young people can try out our radio and TV studios - all of which have been made Covid-safe."

Ross, who has been part of the Youth Media Project for 3 years, said: "Coming to shmu is the best bit of my week.

"I've made good friends and I love all the activities on offer. I never knew much about creating media but now I have made radio shows, podcasts and learned so much about filming and interviewing people. I never get fed up - there is so much to learn and try. I definitely recommend it."
