Summer Sessions at shmu 2026

Creative projects and activities for young people
Our free Summer Sessions programme offers a wide range of creative, hands-on experiences designed to inspire young people throughout the school holidays.

Whether your child is interested in film, music, media, radio or podcast production, there’s something for all to explore, create and enjoy.
Sessions will run on various days throughout the school holidays with a mix of standalone full-day workshops and week long projects (10am–4pm) giving flexible options for families.

Priority for places will be given to young people who are resident in Aberdeen's priority neighbourhoods. Lunch and snacks will be provided - participants just need to bring their energy and enthusiasm!

For ages 14–17

Summer Film School
A week-long immersive experience where young people will work together as a production team to plan, film and edit their own short film, ready for a screening at the end of the week. Participants will learn professional techniques in storytelling, camera work and editing, building skills and confidence in a supportive, collaborative environment.  This activity will run in Week 2 of the holidays, from Monday 13th July through to Friday 17th July.

Summer Podcast School
A creative course exploring the world of podcasting. Young people will develop ideas, record audio, and edit their own podcast episodes while learning about interviewing, storytelling and sound production in our professional studio facilities.  This activity will run in Week 5 of the holidays from Monday 3rd through to Wednesday 5th August.

For ages 11–14 (new S1's to S3 pupils)

Film in a Day
Create a short film or recreate a scene from start to finish in just one day! Participants will take on roles such as acting, directing and filming, and see their ideas brought to life.

Radio in a Day
An engaging introduction to radio production where young people plan, record and present their own show live at 3pm, including music, interviews and creative segments.

Summer Sounds
A series of fun music sessions exploring rhythm, beats, songwriting, recording and performance. Some sessions focus on creating music for film, giving participants a chance to see how sound and visuals work together.
