shmuTRAIN now recruiting for employability courses
shmuTRAIN are now recruiting for Employability Fund courses which start in February 2021. Unlike the accompanying photo (which was taken pre-COVID-19), we can’t have groups in our building due to restrictions, so we'll be delivering courses online.
Our courses are for young people aged 16-25 living in Aberdeen City or Shire and will support you to get prepared and skilled-up ready for any employment, training or education opportunities that come your way.
We use audio and visual media tools to enhance employability skills such as presentation and organisational skills, and to increase confidence.
An example of how we’ll do this online is teaching you how to create scripts for your own radio show or podcast, and recording them as a group on Zoom.
We have 2 course levels – Stage 2 and Stage 3 – depending on where you are on your employability journey.
If you are not sure what you want to do for a job yet and need support to explore options, then Stage 2 is probably for you.
If you have a clear plan and just need a little guidance on where and how to look for a job, then Stage 3 is for you.
You can contact us or your careers or DWP Adviser to discuss this further.
Our Stage 2 course will last 8 weeks. We will use Zoom, Skype, Google Meet and/or Microsoft Teams to conduct group and 1:1 training sessions, working our way through media and personal challenges to identify and develop the skills you need to move forward on your employability journey.
We use Personal Development Awards and National 3 Media to accredit your work.
Our Stage 3 course will last 12 weeks. We will use Zoom, Skype, Google Meet and/or Microsoft Teams to conduct group training sessions for both delivery of the employability and media sessions.
We will set tasks and assignments using Google Classroom, but can also use personal email for those unable to access it.
The course will be a combination of group and 1:1 online sessions to support you with your individual support needs. We will work with you to identify realistic and achievable goals in the current, changing employability landscape and support you to access funding and training courses relevant to your employability goals.
Through the work you do you will achieve the Employability Award and NPA units in Media.
If you are interested or have any questions about the course, please contact Michelle on michelle.trail@shmu.org.uk

Early Interventions
The shmuTRAIN Positive Progressions programme targets and engages young people in the Senior Phase who have been identified as being unlikely to secure a positive destination when leaving school. The programme offers an academic year-long course, which combine skills development with employability support, supported by staff from shmu based within the school.
