Moving Image Arts: AS Level Film Course 2021/22

Study film-making at shmu!

Shmu are once again delivering the AS Level Moving Image Arts course for the 21/22 academic year. MIA is an Applied Subject that examines the history, techniques and creative impact of film, while offering the knowledge and skills to enable students to make their own films.

Over the course of the year, you will develop a knowledge & understanding of film language and techniques with a focus on  key  areas of film such as Camera, Lighting, Mise  en  Scene,  Sound and Editing.

As a student on the course, you will study key movements in film such as Classical Hollywood  Style, Formalism, Realism and the work of Alfred Hitchcock. A critical understanding of these filmmaking styles will then inform your own practice as you apply your creative & technical knowledge to the creation of a 3–4minute short film as part of a portfolio of work.

The course culminates with an exam that focuses on the history, techniques and theory of film. While the course is delivered at shmu, students will attend NESCol to sit both the prelim and the final exam.

Moving Image Arts is an ideal choice for students wishing to pursue a career in the Creative Industries. Progression towards the study of Film & TV in Further and Higher Education is a key aim for many learners each year, whilst others use the skills and knowledge they gain to progress towards entry level roles in Film, TV and the wider Creative Industries.

Here’s Adam Scott, a previous student on the course, to tell you more about it and why you might want to consider enrolling:

The course begins on September 20th 2021 and will take place at shmu in Woodside, Aberdeen on Mondays and Wednesdays 2-4 pm. Participants should be aged 16-25.  Apply now here!
