The future of the film industry rests on spotting talent and developing that talent. The BFI Film Academy Short Course is an excellent start towards a career in the screen industries, where an interest in film and the filmmaking process can be nurtured and grown for ambitious 16 to 19 year olds.
This high-quality course develops your understanding of the fundamentals of filmmaking, from screenwriting, cinematography and sound, to directing, production and editing.
The BFI Academy Scotland Short Course Programme 2024-25 is delivered by a consortium of organisations working together to develop young people aged 16-19 across the nation, with courses delivered in Edinburgh by Screen Education Edinburgh, in Ayrshire by Ayrshire Film Co, in the Highlands by Eden Court Highlands, in Glasgow by GMAC Film, and here in Aberdeen by shmu.
In Aberdeen, the course takes place at shmu's HQ in Woodside, beginning on September 26th, with weekly sessions on Thursdays from 6pm-8pm, with an intensive week during the October school holidays.
You will make short films, learn from top talent working in the industry through masterclasses, and acquire the necessary knowledge and experience to build a career within the screen industries. Through completion of this course, you will gain the NCFE Preparing to Work in the Film Industry Level 5 equivalent qualification, benefitting your professional development, whether through further film study or entering the workplace.
Participants also become part of a BFI Alumni group which opens additional training opportunities across the UK.
No previous experience is necessary – just a passion for film.
We are dedicated to making our courses inclusive and accessible to all and welcome applications from all backgrounds and levels of experience.
The course is free to take part, with bursaries available for those who require assistance with travel costs.
